Most people searching for a product title generator have a data problem, not a writing problem. Somewhere in the catalogue sit 5,000 SKUs with titles like "BOSCH GSB18V-55 CP 2X2.0AH LBOXX", and a channel that wants "Bosch GSB 18V-55 Cordless Combi Drill, 18V, 2 x 2.0Ah Batteries, L-BOXX Case". A product title generator looks like the shortest path from one to the other. Sometimes it is. More often it produces 5,000 titles that look tidy and read wrong, because the generator was never the constraint. The attributes feeding it were.

What a product title generator does well

A product title generator is an assembly tool. Given a set of input fields, it applies a template, fixes casing, trims to a length limit, and does it identically ten thousand times. That is genuinely useful. Consistency at volume is exactly where manual title writing fails: by SKU 300, three different people have three different opinions on whether pack size comes before or after colour.

The tools split into two groups. Free web generators take a few typed fields and return a formatted string, fine for a dozen products and nothing more. Bulk tools, standalone or built into product catalogue enrichment software, apply templates across an entire file. Underneath, both do the same job: they arrange the values you give them.

Which is the catch. Arranging values only works when the values exist.

Why product title generator output disappoints

1. The attributes are not there to assemble

A retail-ready title is built from structured fields: brand, product type, the two or three attributes that differentiate the product, and the variant or pack size. Supplier data rarely delivers those as fields. The brand is embedded in the product name. The product type says "drill" where the category needs "cordless combi drill". The voltage is in a description paragraph. The pack size is in a column headed "Notes".

Point a generator at that file and it assembles what it can find: "Bosch Drill 18V", missing the model, the batteries and the case. Or it passes the supplier's internal code straight through: "BOSCH GSB18V-55 CP Drill". The formatting is correct. The information is not, and no template can assemble an attribute that was never captured.

2. Every channel wants a different title

Amazon allows up to 200 characters in most categories, enforces its own casing rules, bans promotional phrases, and suppresses listings that break the rules. Google Shopping accepts 150 characters but displays around 70, so the differentiating attributes have to appear early. eBay rewards attribute-dense titles. Your own product pages want something shorter and more readable, because the specification table sits next to the title rather than inside it.

One generated string cannot serve all four. A product title generator that outputs a single title per SKU has quietly decided that one channel matters and the others will cope. The version of this that works produces one structured record per product and renders a different title per channel from the same attributes. 3. Good titles are assembled, not written

The premise worth dropping is that titles need a writer. Buyers do not read titles, they scan them for the attributes they searched for: brand, size, material, rating, fitment. In nearly every category the best-performing title is a formula, brand plus product type plus differentiating attributes plus variant, applied without exception. The skill is not in the prose. It is in choosing which attributes belong in the formula for each category, and having those attributes populated on every SKU.

What a product title needs before you automate it

Complete attributes for each category. A drill title needs voltage, chuck size and battery count. A paint title needs colour, finish and volume. The title formula is different per category, which means the attribute requirements are different per category. If your attribute schema does not define what a complete record looks like for each product type, titles will expose the gap on the storefront, one SKU at a time.

Normalised values. "18V", "18 V" and "Eighteen volt" are the same fact stored three ways. Titles surface every inconsistency in the underlying data, because the value gets printed exactly as stored. Normalising units, colours and pack formats before generation is what makes ten thousand titles read as one catalogue rather than two hundred suppliers.

Channel rules as configuration. Length limits, casing, banned words, attribute order. These are per-channel settings, not editorial decisions to remake product by product. Set them once, apply them everywhere.

Fix the attributes first, then generate every title in one pass

The order of operations matters more than the tool. Extract structured attributes from supplier files, normalise the values, define the formula per category, then generate. Done in that order, title generation stops being a project. It becomes a rendering step that takes minutes and repeats identically every time new supplier data lands.

  • It outputs per-channel variants with length and casing rules applied.
  • It works in bulk from a file, and reports which rows it could not complete.
  • It flags missing attributes instead of padding titles with filler words.

A tool that takes a product name and returns a "catchier" version of it fails all five. That is a casing fixer with a text box, and the disappointing titles it produces will cost more time than they save.
